UNESCO recognizes the patronage of the Ravenna Marathon

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, officially recognized its patronage at the Ravenna City of Art Marathon. A great recognition, but above all a public applause for the work carried out in recent years by Ravenna Runners Club and the beauties of a city like Ravenna which is increasingly climbing the rankings of interest among the many cities that base their tourism appeal on culture and history .

In a letter received in the last few days signed by Enrico Vicenti, Secretary General of the Italian UNESCO National Commission, the world-renowned organization announced that it had accepted the request for the patronage of the Ravenna Marathon “in consideration – reads the letter – of the significant value of the initiative aimed at encouraging a more active use of our UNESCO World Heritage by combining sport, art and culture”.

The mix between sporting activity, history and culture that Ravenna Runners Club and the municipal administration of the city have been pursuing for the Marathon, which this year will animate the weekend from November 8th to 10th, continues to bear fruit and produce results that are considered incredible until recently. Ravenna thus enters between part of the UNESCO Marathon network, a network of which Rome, Florence, Venice, Verona, Ferrara and Palermo have already been part.

On the one hand, the RRC organization that is increasingly managing and implementing an international event of great sporting and aggregative appeal. On the other, a territory, and in particular a city rich in history and art like Ravenna, ready to showcase its beauties, starting from the eight early Christian monuments recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1996. Eight famous sites such as the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Baptistery of the Aryans and the Orthodox, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Classe, the Archiepiscopal Chapel and the Mausoleum of Theodoric. All invariably touched by the path of the Ravenna City of Art Marathon, as well as other attractions in the area between museums and monuments.

“For all our society – says Stefano Righini, president of Ravenna Runners Club, the association that organizes the Marathon – it is a great recognition that fills us with pride and, at the same time, further invests us in a role of promoters of the territory that it transcends from the mere organization of an international sporting event, an aspect already very demanding in itself. I would like to thank the staff of RRC, and in particular the organizational secretariat of the company, because only thanks to perseverance, attention to daily work and management skills, this very important Sponsorship has come”.

“Having obtained the patronage of UNESCO – underlines the Mayor of Ravenna Michele De Pascale – and have been included in the network of Maratone’s cities and monuments declared World Heritage sites such as Rome, Florence and Venice it has a really significant value. The Ravenna City of Art Marathon is an extraordinary event of international caliber, able to combine sport, art and tourism in a perfect synthesis. This event, which also represents an exceptional promotional vehicle for the beauties of Ravenna and its territory, has entered the heart of our community and fully among those most eagerly awaited by athletes, runners, citizens and tourists who, taking this opportunity, they have the opportunity to run touching all the Unesco monuments, other significant places of our artistic heritage and more, the historic center, the pine forest, up to the sea. Ravenna and its Marathon represent an example of how healthy life and sustainable tourism are a truly winning combination “.

“Sport, art and culture are now the pieces of a precious mosaic – says the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini – capable of uniting values, passions and beauties of our territories. This important milestone, reached by Ravenna, is an added value not only for the city, but for the entire Emilia-Romagna region. Because being on a par with realities like Rome, Florence and Venice in the network of Maratone’s cities and monuments declared UNESCO World Heritage sites, is a recognition that rewards the beauty of an artistic, historical and livability context that is unique and famous in the world, which highlights the complex of excellences of our land”.
