UNESCO HERITAGE ALONG THE MARATHON ROUTE
The route of the Ravenna Marathon City of Art lays its foundations on three points:
- 42 km which touch all eight Unesco World Heritage monuments
- 42 km in a treasure chest of history that preserves precious evidence of its past that has seen Ravenna three times the capital of the Western Roman Empire
- 42 km in the city of mosaics, from which the medal finisher is inspired
“The set of early Christian and Byzantine religious monuments of Ravenna is of extraordinary importance due to the supreme artistic mastery of the mosaic art. They are also proof of the artistic and religious relationships and contacts of an important period in the history of European culture “.
This was the reason with which Unesco in December 1996 sanctioned the inscription of the early Christian monuments on the World Heritage List. From that moment the Basilica of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Battisteri degli Ariani and Neoniano, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and in Classe, the Archbishop’s Chapel of S. Andrea and the Mausoleum of Theodoric were no longer heritage of the city of Ravenna, but of all humanity.
